My Dog's Toys - Before and After

This post contains affiliate links.

My dog, Shiner, loves getting new toys. I'll put all of her toys away on her dog bed that she doesn't use that often, and minutes later she'll have several of them back out all over the living room floor. Many times, I share Shiner's toys with my readers. Shiner is an intense chewer and can destroy most toys pretty quickly. So today I wanted to share what they look like now.

Many toys have had to be thrown away, but she still has several that are still among the living. Well, kind of living anyways. Here's a look at my dog's toys, before and after she gets her paws on them.

There are many toys that weren't able to make an appearance here because they have already made their way to dog toy heaven. And some aren't on this list because I keep them put away when we aren't playing with them so they don't get destroyed. So while some of the toys here may not look like much now, they should be honored to have made it to this blog post!

PetStages Dental Twist

I was excited about this toy initially when we first got it in February, but Shiner destroyed it quicker than I had anticipated. In the before picutre, you can see that it is braided with black rubber. Well, that black rubber didn't last very long and the braid came undone.

Now, our PetStages Dental Twist is but a very long rope. The rope is still in excellent condition and Shiner still plays with it regularly.

West Paw Design Hurley Dog Toy

Shiner first got her paws on this toy at Christmas 2014, so it's about one and a half years old now. This toy still maintains it's original shape after many hours of vigorous chewing. As you can see, it's in excellent condition for a dog toy of its age. After looking at it, it looks like Shiner enjoys chewing one end of the bone more than the other.

The West Paw Design Hurley Dog Toy is one of my personal favorites of Shiner's dog toys because it's so durable and has lasted so long. It's also one of Shiner's favorites.

Zippy Paws Crinkle Dragonfly

We got this toy in February, and Shiner still likes this thing. I did not have high expectations of the Zippy Paws Crinkle Dragonfly with a tough toy shredder like Shiner. The dragonfly's wings are still in decent condition, however.

Zippy Paws Crinkle Dragonfly has been thoroughly destuffed and his eyeballs were also promptly removed.

FETCH TopsyTurvies Hippo Snail

Another toy we got back in February, I also did not have high expectations for the FETCH TopsyTurvies Hippo Snail. I don't have the heart to throw it away either because Shiner still likes it.

The toy's squeakers and stuffing was promptly removed within a minutes. The hippo snail is still in fairly decent condition considering what it's been through, just minus the fluff.

KONG Wild Knots

Shiner got her KONG Wild Knots dog toy back in March and I thought it was a very cool toy. It's a soft plush toy with a rope on the inside of it. Shiner loved this toy, and spent a good amount of time dissecting it. It took longer than five minutes anyways.

Several months later, you can see that her cute bear toy is now in two pieces. A stuff-less bear's body and the rope that came inside of the bear. I still really like this toy, even though it's now pretty dead. It lasted longer than most plush toys do with Shiner.

Antler Dog Bone Chews

Shiner tried antler dog bone chews for the first time back in October of 2013. Her antler chew is actually still alive today and it's still one of her favorite "toys" to play with. I'm not sure if it's really a toy, but she treats it like one anyways.

This chew is from Peak Antler Company and definitely tops our list of the most durable dog toys and chews. As you can see, there isn't much of the antler left but it sure has lasted a long time.

Martha Stewart Plush Rope Toy

Martha Stewart's Pet collection has some of the cutest toys I've ever seen. However, they seem to be no match for Shiner's intense chewing. The poor cute little plush rope toy did not last long for Shiner and as you can see all that's left is a rope ball. Shiner got this toy back in March, so it's lasted 2 months now.

I haven't thrown it away because Shiner still likes the rope ball. I'll let her have her fun with it.

And these are all of the toys that Shiner has free access to in her collection at this very moment. (I keep some put away unless we are playing with them, like the Puller.) I think it's time to add some new ones! Tell us your dog toy suggestions in the comments.

    1. Well, she doesn't have much of an after either BOL. Many toys did not get an after shot because they have already been thrown away.

  4. Right now we're into "puppy" toys. I cannot tell you how many are floating around the house at the moment. Big on his list are rope/tug toys and balls. Harley still loves the soft stuffed squeaky ones, and the older the better. Shiner and Jax sound like they could really be good toy buddies!

  5. Shiner definitely knows how to destroy toys, LOL! Carmine and Milita have a Yeowww! catnip fish that's all beat up, but they love it so much, I can't bring myself to throw it out.

  6. We have a pile of toys in the toy room upstairs. Mom puts them all up there and Bailie gets her current favs and brings them downstairs. We also have a small pile in the closet of toys needing repair work, since Bailie loves to destroy her toys.

  7. Luma's favorites right now are a Martha Stewart orange crinkle fish with an open mouth that another smaller fish can go into. The smaller fish has a squeaker :) She also likes the Kong Squeaker tennis balls and a large blue dog (her size lol she is a lhasa) that has triangle legs that are all big squeakers. She also likes any new homemade toys. We recycle any squeakers from destroyed toys as well as any old shirts or socks that are destined for the trash to make new rope toys and socks that can hold a plastic bottle or squeaker that she can smush. Oh and anything she can chew like CET dental chews and Pork Chomp products.

    1. Aw the Martha Stewart fish sounds cute! That's a good idea to be resourceful with the squeakers too.

    1. Lol - I just came up with this idea one day out of the blue while picking up her toys. I didn't take pictures of all them... because they just don't exist anymore! But, these are the ones she has right now.

  14. Even though Theo is small, he is rough on his toys! Plush toys just don't last more than 10-15 minutes generally. He loves playing tug. We've found the tug toys from Harry Barker stand up to him. The toys we make from t-shirts (braided strips) last a good long time as well.

    1. We had a t-shirt braid as well, and that lasted a pretty good amount of time with Shiner.

  15. My dogs are tough on toys too. I thought antlers were the answer until Tucker broke several teeth chewing on them. As for stuffies? I buy a bunch of them at a local rummage sale, throw 'em in the wash and give 'em to the dogs a few at a time. Saves a lot of money! (I buy baby safe stuffed animals)

    1. I am very wary with the antlers too because I also worry about that. That's a good idea with the stuffies. I usually have an abundance of them that we win from the crane games with my kids. When I'm going through old toys, I'll usually give a few of those to Shiner. They aren't baby safe, but I just let her pull the stuffing out for a little while and then toss em. Good for maybe an hour's worth of fun at least :)

  16. We love the Westpaw Hurley so much because of it's durability. Shiner's a pretty impressive chewer - Laika's had hers for about a year and has barley put a mark on it. I find it quite funny as well that she's clearly interested in only one side of it :)

    1. How funny that she does the same thing! I am thinking that since that end is most destroyed, she feels like she has to keep trying to complete her work there. But who knows?

  17. It looks like she had fun with those toys. I'm not surprised the hippo snail didn't last though. The cotton stuffing is usually too tempting for most dogs.

    1. I'm also not surprised, but she loves the stuffed toys. Pulling out the stuffing is the best part! :)
